Bin Akio was born as Akio Kawai, in Saitama, Japan, 1950.His father Gaifu Kawai was a haiku poet, so haiku has been familiar with him since early childhood. After graduating from Saitama University, he taught Japanese language in junior high school and studied media education and modern haiku. In 1992, he won the 11th Modern Haiku Association Critique Prize for the essay on Modernity in Masaoka Shiki.
He graduated Master's Program in Information and Media Studies Universityof library Information Science. Now he is the publisher of haiku magazine Jiku. He is a part-time teacher at two universities and studying about haiku media at Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies University of Tsukuba. He is a member of Japan P.E.N. and he is Web-master of World Haiku Association. Publications include an anthology of his haiku, My Whereabouts(2000), and Osamaranu(2005) and aforementioned essay,"Modernity in Shiki -kokkei, media, and Japanese"(1999), Kyoshi and Hototogisu(2005).
