GOZO YOSHIMASU (Japan)

yoshimasuGozo Yoshimasu was born 1939, in Tokyo. Graduated from Keio University with a degree in Japanese literature. Opening up new fields in poetry as one of its leading Japanese practitioners, Yoshimasu remains active internationally. His poems have been translated into and discussed in many languages. His poetry collections include Shuppatsu, Ogon Shihen (awarded the Takami Jun Prize), Okoku, Kusazu de Kakareta, Kawa, Neppu (awarded the Rekitei Prize), Osiris, the God of Stone (awarded the Hanatsubaki Prize for contemporary poetry), Rasenka (awarded the Bungakukan Poetry Prize), "Yuki no Shima" arui wa Emiri no Yurei (awarded the Minister of Education's Award for the Arts) and The Other Voice, and his works of criticism include Asa no Tegami, Uchifurueteiku Jikan and Shogai wa Yume no Chukei. Yoshimasu is known as a pioneer in public readings and has lately proved a striking photographer as well.
